Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what data the Translator & Dictionary browser extension (the “Extension”) processes and how it is handled. The Extension is designed to keep your data on your own device. It does not require an account, does not include analytics or tracking, and does not sell or share your personal data.

What the extension does

The Extension translates individual words and phrases that you select on a web page, shows the translation in a small on-page tooltip, can play the word’s pronunciation, and lets you save words to a personal dictionary for language learning.

Data stored on your device

The following data is stored locally only, using the browser’s chrome.storage.local, and never leaves your device through the Extension:

• Settings — the language you are learning and your native language, how translation is triggered, and whether pronunciation plays automatically.
• Personal dictionary — words you choose to save, together with their translation, transcription, image and audio links, and metadata about where the word was saved (the page’s domain, URL and title) and the date.
• Translation cache — a small number of recent translations, kept so that re-selecting the same word shows instantly without a new network request.

This data is used solely to provide the Extension’s features. You can delete individual words, clear the dictionary, or clear the cache at any time from the Extension’s options page. Uninstalling the Extension removes all of this local data.

Data sent to third parties

To produce a translation and pronunciation, the Extension sends the text you select (or type into its popup) to third-party translation services. This happens only when you actively select text or request a translation:

• Skyeng Dictionary (dictionary.skyeng.ru) — receives the selected word to return its dictionary entry (translation, transcription, image).
• Skyeng TTS (vimbox-tts.skyeng.ru and Skyeng CDN subdomains) — used to load pronunciation audio and word images.
• Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com) — receives the selected phrase or sentence to return its translation.

Only the selected text is sent, and only for the purpose of translating it. No account identifiers, browsing history, or other personal information is attached to these requests by the Extension. Your use of these services is also subject to their own privacy policies: Google Privacy Policy and Skyeng.

What we do not collect

• No personally identifiable information (name, email, address, ID numbers).
• No accounts, passwords, or authentication data.
• No financial, health, or location data.
• No analytics, advertising, tracking, or behavioral profiling.
• We do not sell or transfer your data to third parties outside the approved use case of providing the translation you requested, and we do not use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending.

Permissions

• storage — to save your settings, dictionary, and cache locally on your device.
• offscreen — to play pronunciation audio in the Extension’s own context (a service worker cannot play audio, and the host page’s security policy may block it).
• Host access to dictionary.skyeng.ru, vimbox-tts.skyeng.ru, *.skyeng.ru, and translate.googleapis.com — to fetch translations, pronunciation, and images directly from those services.

Data retention

All Extension data is kept on your device until you remove it (by deleting words, clearing the cache, or uninstalling the Extension). We do not operate servers that store your data.

Children

The Extension is a general-purpose language tool and is not directed to children, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, in the Extension’s store listing.
